Eco-Friendly Secret Santa Tips

A gift exchange does not have to end with a bin full of paper and plastic. Small choices add up to a festive, low-waste celebration.

Updated

The holiday season produces a remarkable amount of waste: single-use wrapping, novelty items that are forgotten by January, and packaging that cannot be recycled. A Secret Santa is a natural fit for a greener approach, because everyone gives one considered gift instead of many. Here is how to make the most of that.

Set an eco theme for the group

The easiest way to go green is to agree on it together. When you send the rules, suggest a theme such as "second-hand, handmade or consumable". People rise to the challenge, and it removes any worry that a pre-loved gift might seem less generous. Mention it in the message you send with each reveal link when you set up your draw, and our organizing guide covers how to agree on rules that everyone is happy with.

Low-waste gift ideas

Experiences

Tickets to a concert, a yoga class, a guided walk or a cooking workshop. No packaging, and a memory that lasts.

Consumables

Local honey, homemade jam, loose-leaf tea, fair-trade chocolate or a bottle of good olive oil. Enjoyed, then gone.

Second-hand treasures

A vintage book, a retro board game, a quality jumper from a charity shop or a classic vinyl record.

Handmade gifts

Knitted items, baked goods, a jar of spiced nuts, a framed photo or a handwritten recipe collection.

Reusables

A stainless steel bottle, beeswax food wraps, a sturdy tote bag or a set of cloth napkins.

Plants and seeds

A potted herb, a cutting from your own plant or a selection of wildflower seeds for spring.

Buying second-hand without awkwardness

Pre-loved gifts can be some of the most thoughtful, because finding the right one takes effort. Look for items in excellent condition: books with uncreased spines, games with all their pieces, clothing that looks barely worn. Clean and check everything before wrapping. If your group has not agreed on a second-hand theme, a short note explaining your choice ("I found this vintage edition and thought of you") turns it into a story rather than a shortcut.

Wrapping without the waste

Much conventional wrapping paper contains foil, glitter or plastic coatings and cannot be recycled. Try these alternatives instead.

Furoshiki

Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese technique for wrapping objects in a square of fabric. A scarf, tea towel or offcut of cotton works perfectly. Place the gift in the centre, fold opposite corners over it and tie the remaining two corners in a neat knot on top. The fabric becomes part of the gift and can be reused for years.

Other ideas

  • Brown paper or newspaper, decorated with stamps, drawings or a sprig of rosemary or pine
  • Reused gift bags and boxes saved from previous celebrations
  • Glass jars for treats, which double as storage afterwards
  • Natural twine or ribbon instead of plastic tape and curling ribbon
  • Paper tags cut from old greeting cards

Quick test: scrunch the paper in your hand. If it stays scrunched, it can usually be recycled. If it springs back, it probably contains plastic.

Gifts to think twice about

Novelty gadgets, single-joke items and anything with a lot of plastic packaging tend to have a short life. That does not mean the exchange cannot be playful; just aim for humour that also has a use, like a quirky mug or a silly but warm hat. If your group loves joke presents, a White Elephant exchange can be a fun place to swap things people already own.

Going digital

Running the draw online is already a small win: no paper slips, no printed instructions, and everyone receives a private reveal link on their phone. If your group is spread out, a virtual Secret Santa with experiences or digital gifts can cut shipping entirely.

Small changes, real difference

You do not need to be perfect. Choosing one consumable gift, wrapping it in fabric and skipping the plastic tape is already a meaningful step. Share your ideas with the group, and you may find that the most memorable gift this year is also the gentlest on the planet.
